President Joe Biden on Wednesday choked up as he blasted Donald Trump, saying the presumptive Republican presidential nominee "doesn't deserve to be the Commander-in-Chief for my son." "They asked him to go visit American grave sites. Because they were all suckers and losers," Biden said, citing the reports about Trump's rationale. That man doesn't deserve," Biden said, pausing for several seconds as he choked up before adding, "to be the Commander-in-Chief for my son." CNN —British runner Jasmin Paris became the first woman ever to finish the legendary Barkley Marathons on Friday. Paris was one of five finishers in the 2024 edition of the Barkley Marathons, with Ukrainian Ihor Verys finishing first, American’s John Kelly and Jared Campbell finishing second and third respectively and Greig Hamilton from New Zealand finishing fourth. Verys, who finished with a time of 58:44:59, told Dunn: “Maybe you should add a sixth loop.”Conversely, Campbell – who completed the Barkley Marathons for the fourth time with a time of 59:30:32 – said: “That new section is brutal. The Barkley Marathons has become famous for its grueling, near-impossible nature. The races’ tough nature makes it a tough finish for many, with no finishers between 2017 and 2023.

“He views himself as a big guy,” John Bolton, who served as national security adviser under Trump, told me. CNN —A new glimpse inside Donald Trump’s inner circle shows how the ex-president’s men and women often confront a fateful dilemma under huge personal pressure. Butler’s comments are important because they foretell how he might testify in the federal classified documents trial that could be hugely damaging to Trump but that is increasingly unlikely to happen before Americans vote in the fall. Why ‘Trump Employee 5’ broke his silenceIt is too early to say whether Butler’s testimony would be decisive in the federal trial in the classified documents case. Walt Nauta, a Trump personal aide, and De Oliveira, who have not broken with the ex-president, have also denied wrongdoing. Mr. Trump churned through cabinet-level appointees so fast that at times it seemed like he was still on “The Apprentice” and had to fire one official every week. Not only are they people whom Mr. Trump chose — he claimed he would hire the “best people” — they are people who thought Mr. Trump was worth working for. Editor’s Note: John Avlon is a CNN senior political analyst and anchor. A truly stunning number of former Cabinet-level Trump administration officials are trying to warn Republican primary voters that their old boss’s reelection would be a disaster for our country. Share them with friends, family and neighbors who might be tempted to go along with the crowd and vote for Trump. But what about the Republican elected officials who have scrambled to endorse Trump before a single person has actually voted? So the voters of Iowa and New Hampshire have a disproportionate responsibility over the next few days.

“We can’t participate in the normalization of Donald Trump,” an impassioned Goldberg told me by phone on Monday. On Monday, The Atlantic published a special edition of its monthly magazine focusing on what a second Trump term would look like. “And I believe that a second Trump term poses a threat to the existence of America as we know it.”It is not difficult for newsrooms to state that they are pro-democracy. That is why I am comfortable devoting an entire issue of answering the question of what a second Trump term would look like and reaching the conclusion that it would be terrible. But, he warned, a second Trump presidency could be even worse for the press.

Kinzinger in his new book wrote of how he witnessed the work that John Kelly was putting in as chief of staff. The former GOP lawmaker said Kelly spent a lot of time trying to restrain many of Trump's personal instincts. AdvertisementAdvertisementFormer Rep. Adam Kinzinger said former Trump White House chief of staff John Kelly was once so "exhausted" from his role that he "could barely stay awake" during a private breakfast at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "It was 8:00 a.m. and he could barely stay awake," Kinzinger wrote. "The problem with Trump, from a chief of staff's perspective, was that he preferred to do everything informally and on his own with minimum staff engagement," Kinzinger wrote.

They can also rile up Trump's own party, which then incorporates the former president's vendettas and impulses into its own agenda. Though most in his party have stayed quiet, Trump's comments about Milley horrified some Republicans. On the debate stage last week, Trump’s rivals for the GOP nomination didn't address the former president's more incendiary rhetoric. Democrats, including Biden, have warned that Trump and supporters in his Make America Great Again movement are a threat to American democracy. At last week's California Republican Party convention in a hotel ballroom in Anaheim, Trump’s rhetoric reached yet another level.

Several Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls criticized Donald Trump Sunday as the former president faces 37 federal counts for allegedly hoarding documents after he left the White House. "He's a petulant child when someone disagrees with him," Christie told CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday. Presidential hopeful and former Vice President Mike Pence said it is "premature" to say whether or not he would pardon Trump were he to be convicted. "All we know is what the president has been accused of in the indictment," Pence told NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday. But Trump had a supporter on Sunday in Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy who has said the former president should be pardoned if convicted.

During those voluntary interviews, the former official told CNN there was a distinct difference in the line of questioning from prosecutors in the two probes. Speaking to CNN on condition of anonymity, the former official said he told federal prosecutors that Trump knew the proper process for declassifying documents and followed it correctly at times while in office. Sources previously told CNN that Trump’s team returned some materials but not the document pertaining to Iran. “Nothing approaching an order that foolish was ever given,” Kelly told CNN. Most recently, Trump told CNN at a town hall that materials were “automatically declassified” when he took them.

FBI agents flew with van der Sloot on a US Department of Justice plane to an airport in Birmingham, Alabama, where he landed Thursday afternoon. Van der Sloot was seen leaving the Ancón 1 prison in Lima early Thursday, as he was driven away in a black van while in the custody of law enforcement. Peru initially agreed to extradite van der Sloot to the US to face those charges only after he serves his murder sentence. “I want to go to the US,” van der Sloot told Altez in a letter. The U.S. is giving away and auctioning off lighthouses across the East Coast and Midwest. The GSA will also sell four lighthouses in Ohio, Connecticut, Michigan and New York in a public auction. But there's a catch: While the lighthouse is free, the new owners will be responsible for the cost of upkeep and maintenance. Warwick Neck Light is located on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island and is one of the lighthouses being given away for free. Kelly told TIME that there are nonprofits that already maintain some of the lighthouses being offered up this year.

CNN —Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, was “severely” beaten in a Peruvian prison, his attorney told ABC News on Monday. It may be connected to gang rules inside the Challapalca Prison where van der Sloot is being held, Altez said. Natalee Holloway was last seen alive with van der Sloot and two other men 18 years ago leaving a nightclub in Aruba. The three men – van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe – were arrested in 2005 and released due to insufficient evidence. They were rearrested and charged in 2007 for “involvement in the voluntary manslaughter of Natalee Holloway or causing serious bodily harm to Natalee Holloway, resulting in her death,” Aruban prosecutors said at the time.
The US General Services Administration (GSA) is offering a record number of lighthouses to the public. The GSA will give away six to nonprofits and government entities, and sell another four via public auction. The lighthouses are being offered as part of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. Since its inception, over 150 lighthouses have circulated through the NHLPA program, the GSA said. But John McEntee, who worked as a top White House staffer when former President Donald Trump attempted to ban the app via executive order, says he's unabashedly "pro-TikTok" and insists the push from the right to ban the Chinese-owned app is "ridiculous." "I think Republicans are such nerds for even doing this," McEntee, the one-time Director of the Official of Presidential Personnel, told Insider in an interview on Thursday. In that job, he reportedly scrutinized White House staffers for their perceived loyalty and played a significant role in the effort to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election results on January 6, 2021. In one widely-viewed TikTok, McEntee dances to Demi Lovato's "La La Land" while riffing on liberals attending their first protest, making hand-horns as Lovato sings the phrase "converse with my dress."
